Gentle Rivers was commissioned by the Fort Wayne Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota in celebration of their 50th anniversary. It was premiered by the Fort Wayne Children’s Choir Youth Chorale on May 7, 2022 at the Rhinehart Music Center on the campus of Purdue Fort Wayne, Indiana. Mr. Jonathan Busarow conducted the Youth Chorale. The ensemble plans on taking the piece on their 2023 Tour to Japan, during which they will sing the piece in Fort Wayne’s Sister City of Takaoka. In the composer’s words, “From the start I was trying to put myself in the shoes of the FWCC students visiting Japan, singing to their audiences and making lasting friendships. I kept coming back to the personal aspect of two friends whose relationship grows over time, even though they live very far apart. Takaoka and Fort Wayne both have rivers that run right through the central areas of their cities, so that seemed like a good direction to go with the piece.” The obligato flute is available in original, more difficult form and also in a simplified version.
